Cruising On A Budget- How to get the best cruise deals
I have a confession—my family and I are totally hooked on cruising! There’s something special about the all-inclusive experience and the excitement of exploring new destinations. Meals? Already sorted. Entertainment? All set. Getting to incredible ports of call? Handled. Honestly, is there anything better than waking up, sipping your coffee on the balcony, and watching the ship pull into a brand-new port? It’s like being pampered nonstop, with zero effort required. I can almost hear the waves and feel the sun on my skin just thinking about it. Ahh, pure bliss!
While vacations, including cruises, can get pricey, I have made it my mission to figure out how and when to snag the best deals, so we can go on as many cruises as possible. This knowledge has also been invaluable in helping my clients plan their travels. Are you considering a cruise for your next getaway? Click HERE to receive your complimentary cruise quote!
Here are some key things to keep in mind if you're looking for the best cruise deals...
Choose the Best Dates
Travel dates significantly impact vacation prices, particularly for cruises, as they are driven by supply and demand. For example, prices tend to spike during school breaks, especially on family-focused lines like Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival Cruises. A Christmas cruise, for instance, will be much more expensive than a mid-week sailing in January. Don’t have flexibility for an off-season getaway? No problem—there are still some great deals!
Many people shy away from cruising during hurricane season (June to November, with the peak months being August to October), but it's important to remember that cruise lines prioritize safety above all else. They won’t sail through dangerous storms and will adjust routes or make changes if necessary. In fact, we've found fantastic deals during this time and have never experienced any issues with bad weather.
Find the Perfect Stateroom
Choosing the right room can help you save money, along with picking the best travel dates! Cruise lines offer "guaranteed" rooms where they choose your stateroom within your selected category. These rooms are often cheaper than those you pick yourself. If you don’t need a specific room, like connecting rooms or one in a location that reduces motion, this can be a good option. Generally, the most affordable rooms are interior rooms or obstructed ocean view or verandah rooms. For shorter cruises, we usually go for interior rooms since we’re out of the room a lot. But for longer, scenic trips like Alaskan cruises, we love having a verandah room.
Work with an Expert
The best way to find great cruise deals is to work with a travel planner. Booking early, as soon as dates are released, is usually the cheapest time to get a good deal because prices are lower when there are more rooms available. Travel planners, such as myself, have close connections with cruise lines and know exactly when booking dates will be released. Plus, they can set up monthly payments to make cruising more affordable. Typically bookings open about 12-18 months in advance.
Let's also discuss the special offers that pop up throughout the year! If you're anything like me, you're always on the lookout for a great deal. Cruise lines frequently offer perks like onboard credits, discounts for extra guests, kids sail free, discounted beverage packages, lower deposits, and much more! Here’s a tip for booking cruises: try to book early, especially during off-peak seasons. Then, stay on the lookout for new promotions and adjust your booking if a better deal comes along. And remember to take advantage of loyalty programs to save even more on future cruises!
Also, did you know that many cruise lines offer special rates for military members and other groups? You might be eligible for discounts or exclusive perks based on your service or other criteria. Be sure to ask about these offers when booking your cruise!
